Can I build a tall retaining wall using timber sleepers?
Timber sleeper retaining walls are generally best suited for low to mid-height applications, typically up to 1 metre high. Anything taller can place too much pressure on the timber over time, especially in areas with heavy rainfall or clay-based soil, like many parts of Western Sydney. If you’re planning a taller wall, it may require engineering approval, and in most cases, concrete sleepers are the more stable and long-lasting option.
That said, we can still work with treated hardwood or reinforced timber for walls over 1 metre, provided the site conditions allow and proper reinforcement is used. While timber can work for lower heights, we often recommend concrete sleepers for taller engineered retaining walls.
